In an interview on Accra based 3FM on 22nd January, 2019, monitored by Ghanapoliticsonline.com, Alban Bagbin stated confidently that nobody amongst the seven candidates running for the leadership of the NDC will be able to attain the 50% required by the party’s constitution to confirm a legitimate flagbearer.

The Deputy Speaker who was speaking on the NDC presidential primaries set to come off on 23rd February 2019 said ex-president John Dramani Mahama is leading the race at the moment but can only get about 30% at the end of the contest.

The NDC primary was originally scheduled to come off on Friday, December 7, 2018, in accordance with the constitution of the party to elect a flagbearer exactly two years to the presidential elections, if it is in opposition.

But misunderstandings over the nomination and filing fees for the flagbearer aspirants forced a change in the scheduled January 26, 2019.

An injunction filed by two members of the party nearly forced an indefinite suspension of the primary, but for an out-of-court agreement reached in court.

Alban Bagbin served as a Housing Minister in the erstwhile National Democratic Congress led by John Dramani Mahama and has been a parliamentarian since 1992.
